Welcome to the Macabre Movie Morgue

I'm sure you may be wondering just who I am, and what exactly this place is.

My name is Bob Brinkman and I'm a lifelong Lovecraft fan, having discovered his works back in the 1970s. I've traveled the country as a fire-breather and swordsman, recorded as a singing pirate, performed at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, and all number of other endeavors. These days, my life is a bit quieter, and I spend much of my time writing and working as a freelance game designer for Goodman Games (creators of DCC RPG). I'm also a longtime friend of the site and contributor to Unfilmable.com - having written my first review for the site back in 2005. Now, twenty years later, I'm hard at work on a project unlike any other, a viewer's guide to Lovecraftian short films.

While there have been a number of books which have delved into Lovecraft-inspired cinema (I highly recommend The Lurker in the Lobby by Andrew Migliore and John Strysik and The Medial Afterlives of H.P. Lovecraft edited by Tim Lanzendorfer and Max Jose Dreysse Passos de Carvalho), there has never been a guide devoted to short films. Indeed, the sheer quantity of them makes for a daunting project - but here I am. In fact, since the earliest known nod to Lovecraft in a short film (Call Simon Winston: Simon the Exorcist in 1974), over 2,000 short films have been created adapting, paying homage, or dropping references to Lovecraft's work. Currently, I am working on a guide which will include 1,000 of these short films. My target for release is sometime in late 2025.

While this may seem to be something appearing from nowhere, I've actually been working on this project (and more) for quite some time. Through my work with Unfilmable, I met Lovecraft film historian Franklin Hummel and have worked with him for over 20 years now. I've been given access to his complete collection of film research and, combined with my own archive of data, there is a cyclopean hoard of materials to work through. The short film guide is only the beginning of what I have planned, but one step at a time.

So, what is this site?

The Macabre Movie Morgue is a place for horror film reviews, although not solely for Lovecraft adaptations or cosmic horror. While I've written reviews for both Unfilmable.com and HorrorNews.net (as well as my own "Films of High Adventure" blog), I felt it time to begin writing general horror reviews again. While some of the films I review here will eventually make their way into my book, that isn't a requirement. Indeed, the first short I've reviewed here, Spoor, isn't cosmic horror - just well worth reviewing.

That's what this place is all about, reviewing films I'm watching, just for the enjoyment of doing so.

The other thing is, the films I'm reviewing here will all be available for legitimate on-line viewing (such as on YouTube or Vimeo) with the link provided at the end of the film's details. So please, grab some popcorn and find your way to a seat. The show is about to begin...
